Canada Hits Back with $20 Billion Tariffs on American Goods
Canada has imposed tariffs of $20 billion on American products in response to Donald Trump's 50% tariff increase on cars, auto parts, and Canadian-imported cheese. The new tariffs will come into effect on January 1, 2027, affecting automobiles, auto components, and Canadian cheese.
The 'dollar for dollar' approach means that Canada will impose countervailing duties on American goods such as cheese, dairy products, household appliances, and other items. This measure comes after the failure of trade negotiations and adds to existing tariffs on cheese, aluminum, and lumber from Canada.
American imports valued at approximately $28 billion Canadian dollars will be subject to tariffs ranging from 15% to 50%, set to take effect at midnight on September 8. The move is seen as a response to Trump's previous tariff increase, which has led to a trade dispute between the two countries.
