Canada Hits Back with $20 Billion Worth of Retaliatory Tariffs
Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on US exports in response to US trade policies. The move, effective September 8, targets over $20 billion worth of annual imports from the US, including steel, dairy products, appliances, and electronics.
The Canadian Finance Minister, François-Philippe Champagne, stated that Canada would apply tariffs matching those imposed by the US 'dollar for dollar'. This means that Canada will impose 15%, 25%, or 50% tariffs on various US exports, depending on the category.
While the $20 billion figure is significant, experts suggest it may not have a substantial impact on the US economy. However, the trade war could escalate further if goods such as American cars and Canadian oil become involved.
