Canada Hits Back with Dollar-for-Dollar Tariffs on US Goods
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Saturday that Ottawa will impose 'dollar-for-dollar' retaliatory tariffs on 20 billion U.S. dollars' worth of American goods, starting September 8.
The move comes after the breakdown of trade talks with the United States, which saw the U.S. imposing a 50-percent tariff on Canadian goods worth 20 billion U.S. dollars just hours earlier.
Carney stated that the new tariffs will affect various sectors, including dairy, steel, appliances, pulp and paper, and electronics.
The prime minister attributed the collapse of negotiations to last-minute changes introduced by the U.S. side, which he deemed 'unfair' and 'uneconomic.'
