Canada Hits Back with Retaliatory Tariffs on US
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Saturday that his country will impose retaliatory tariffs on the US in response to the $20 billion worth of Canadian goods being targeted with a 50% tariff by Washington.
The new Canadian tariffs, which take effect on September 8, will target various US industries, including steel, dairy, and electronics. The government has stated that it aims to match the US dollar for dollar in its retaliatory measures to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed frustration with the breakdown of negotiations with the US, stating that the proposed terms were 'uneconomic, unfair, and undermined the net benefits' for Canada. He added that US negotiators made unacceptable threats to Quebec culture and the French language.
