Canada Hits Back with Tariffs as Trade War Escalates
Maine's economy is bracing for the impact of retaliatory tariffs imposed by Canada in response to the US trade dispute. The US has implemented a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, effective from Saturday morning. This move follows failed negotiations between the two countries.
Maine imports approximately $2 billion worth of non-petroleum products from Canada annually. State leaders are concerned that these tariffs will lead to higher costs for businesses and families in Maine. Governor Janet Mills took to social media to express her disappointment, stating that 'the President’s latest escalation of his foolish trade war with Canada will create more uncertainty for Maine businesses.'
Senator Susan Collins urged the Trump administration to reconsider its decision, saying that the tariffs would increase costs for Maine families through higher prices. US Representative Chellie Pingree shared similar concerns, warning that the move would further erode one of America's most critical global alliances.
