Canada Hits Back with Tariffs on Hundreds of US Products
Canada has imposed tariffs on hundreds of U.S. products worth about $20 billion in response to a new round of tariffs from President Donald Trump. The Canadian government claims its tariffs match Washington's dollar for dollar and rate for rate, covering around 6% of the $333.6 billion in American goods exported to Canada last year.
The move is seen as a test case for how smaller countries can resist Trump's economic pressure, with some analysts predicting that the U.S. economy will be largely unaffected but specific businesses may suffer. The tariffs target products such as steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics, and farm equipment, at rates of 15%, 25%, or 50%.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has spoken out against the U.S. demands, saying they could hollow out key Canadian industries and limit the country's independence. Trump has responded with personal attacks and threats, including a promise to ban Bombardier aircraft sales in the U.S. unless they manufacture planes there.
