Canada Hits Wood Cabinet Imports with Provisional Safeguard Tariff
The Government of Canada has taken steps to protect its industries and strengthen the economy by imposing a provisional safeguard tariff on wood cabinet and vanity imports.
The Minister of Finance and National Revenue, François-Philippe Champagne, announced a 25 percent surtax on certain wood cabinets and vanities while an ongoing Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) safeguard inquiry continues.
This temporary measure aims to address the challenges facing Canadian manufacturers due to harmful trade diversion caused by the changing global trade environment. The tariff will help stabilize market conditions and support domestic production, according to officials.
The surtax took effect on July 31, 2026, and will remain in place for a maximum of 200 days. Canada's trading partners, including the United States, Mexico, Israel, Chile, and developing countries, are exempt from this measure.
