Canada Imposes Dollar-for-Dollar Tariffs on US Goods Amid Escalating Trade War
Prime Minister Mark Carney's decision to impose dollar-for-dollar matching counter tariffs against the U.S. on September 8 marks a reversal of his previous stance on trade negotiations with the U.S.
As reported by Toronto Sun, this is not the first time Carney has changed his policy on dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs. When he was running for the Liberal leadership, he supported dollar-for-dollar matching counter tariffs against the U.S., but after becoming prime minister, he reversed his argument, saying it was unrealistic due to Canada's smaller economy.
According to Trevor Tombe, a University of Calgary economist, Trump's latest round of 50% tariffs on $28 billion worth of Canadian goods could result in almost 90,000 direct and indirect job losses across Canada. This would raise the national unemployment rate from 6.4% to 6.8%
A report by the Canadian American Business Council estimated that an all-out trade war between Canada and the U.S. could lead to a loss of $5,987 per Canadian household over 10 years and a $271 billion loss in GDP.
