Canada Imposes Tariffs on $20 Billion of US Goods Amid Trade Impasse

On August 21, Ottawa and Washington reached an impasse in trade talks, leading Canada to impose tariffs on $20 billion worth of US goods. The move is a response to US tariffs announced in July, which have sparked tensions between the two nations.

Solange Márquez, a law professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and fellow at the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, notes that the actions taken by Washington over the past 18 months have 'taught Canada that the United States is not an ally they can trust anymore.'

Mexico's approach to trade talks with Washington differs from Ottawa's. Despite having trade deals with more than 50 countries, the Mexican government has been less interested in diversifying its economy.
