Canada Inflation Hits 3% as Gas Prices Surge
Canada's economy is facing renewed challenges as inflation surged to 3% in July, exceeding expectations. The annual increase was driven by higher gasoline and travel costs, with prices rising 0.5% on a monthly basis.
The spike in headline inflation was anticipated due to elevated energy prices, but the core inflation measures remained steady at around 2%. This has led economists to believe that the Bank of Canada may maintain its key policy rate unchanged.
Gasoline prices saw a significant surge, increasing by 25.7% annually, while travel costs also rose, particularly in cities hosting the football World Cup. However, grocery prices moderated from June's rise, and shelter costs remained subdued at 1.3%.
