Canada Inflation Surges to 3%, Core Measures Accelerate
Canada's headline inflation rate accelerated to 3.0% in July, outpacing market expectations of 2.9%. The annual increase was driven primarily by rising energy costs, with gasoline prices surging from 20.5% to 25.7% y/y.
The monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) swung from a decline of -0.4% in June to an increase of 0.5% in July, also exceeding forecasts.
While the energy-driven inflation is not entirely surprising given global events such as the Middle East conflict and transportation disruptions, the simultaneous acceleration across core measures suggests underlying price pressures are firming.
