Canada Introduces New $20 Bill with King Charles Portrait
The Bank of Canada has unveiled its new $20 bill featuring King Charles on its front. The note, which marks the first Canadian bank note to display a new monarch, replaces the image of Queen Elizabeth II who was first featured in 1935 as a young princess.
Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem described the unveiling as historic during a news conference, citing that more than 70 years have passed since a new monarch appeared on Canadian currency. The new note includes security technologies never before used on a Canadian bank note and is predominantly green with a purple security stripe.
The bill contains elements that spin, transform, and pulse when the note is moved, making it easy to verify and difficult to counterfeit. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the new $20 note reflects important aspects of Canadian identity, honoring Commonwealth roots and ties with international allies.
