Canada Matches US Tariffs Dollar-for-Dollar Amid Collapsed Trade Talks
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on August 23 that Canada will match US tariffs dollar-for-dollar after trade negotiations between the two countries collapsed. The move aims to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses from the impact of the 50% tariff imposed by the US on nearly $28 billion worth of Canadian imports.
Carney stated that for over a year, Canada had worked intensively with the US to negotiate a new comprehensive trade deal, but the talks ultimately broke down. He instructed Canadian negotiators to return to Ottawa after realizing that the US offer was 'unfair and uneconomic'.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Canada would introduce additional measures to support workers and businesses, building on nearly $25 billion in assistance provided over the past 18 months. The country is also working to strengthen its domestic economy and diversify trade partnerships.
