Canada Must Act Swiftly on Energy Amid Global Supply Shock
The International Energy Agency (IEA) executive director, Fatih Birol, is urging Canada to accelerate its development and export of energy resources. Speaking at a policy conference in Toronto, Birol warned that market conditions will only favor Canada for so long due to the Iran war's impact on global oil supply.
The IEA estimates that 14 million barrels per day of oil are being lost due to the conflict. To mitigate this shortage, members agreed to release 400 million barrels of oil to the market in March. Birol emphasized that while accelerating project timelines is crucial, it must not come at the cost of lower environmental and human rights standards.
Canada's reputation for lengthy regulatory approvals has hindered its ability to attract investment from international players. Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem acknowledged this challenge, stating that investors want predictable and swift regulatory regimes to avoid locking up capital for too long.
