Canada Refuses to Back Down in Trade War with Trump
President Donald Trump and his administration have been insulting Canada as they wage an unprovoked trade war against the country. However, their tactics appear to be backfiring, with Canada's response not being what they expected.
Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association of Canada, said that auto parts makers were not intimidated by Trump's proposal to collect tariffs on Canadian auto parts last year. He noted that such a move would have shut down the auto industry in a week and added, 'Ultimately, I think they will back off that. But if they don't, they can have at it.'
Prime Minister Mark Carney has made clear that he is not in a hurry to return to negotiations with the US and is instead focused on diversifying Canada's trade and expanding its domestic economy.
Countries targeted by Trump's tariffs include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Texas, and Wisconsin, all states where Trump won significant support. Some analysts question how much pressure this will put on the White House, but Canadian officials have suggested that many of the targeted American items come from these states.
Dr. Richard D. Wolff, a professor emeritus of economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, noted that Trump's tariffs are not being met with the expected reaction from Canada or other countries. He compared this to the US-Iran conflict, where the US thought they could easily impose their will but were met with resistance.
