Canada Rejects Plan to Allow Jets at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport

The federal government has rejected Ontario Premier Doug Ford's plan to allow jets at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, which would have quintupled annual passengers from 2 million to 10 million. The decision comes after a consultation that received over 87,000 responses, with about 87% of respondents opposing the changes.

Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said the government will not support the plan, citing the strong opposition from Toronto residents and business owners. This decision is seen as a major victory for community advocates who had been fighting against the expansion plans.

Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria expressed disappointment with the federal government's decision but stated that the provincial government still has plans to advance the airport's expansion, which could contribute up to $8.5 billion to Canada's economy every year and create thousands of jobs.
