Canada Retaliates Against US Tariffs With $20 Billion Counter-Measure
Canada has imposed tariffs on about $20 billion worth of US goods in response to the latest round of tariffs from the US. The move is seen as a symbol of resistance against US President Donald Trump's economic pressure, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warning that US demands could hollow out key Canadian industries and limit the country's independence.
Trump has responded by threatening to punish Canada even further, including banning the sale of aircraft from Bombardier unless they manufacture planes in the US. He has also threatened 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts, and steel next year if Canada does not 'fall in line.'
Despite being at a disadvantage with the much larger US economy, Canadian leaders remain confident that they can win this trade war. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly stated that she is convinced Canada will be able to show the world that it will emerge victorious.
