Canada Secures $10 Billion for Clean Energy Upgrade
Canada's federal government has partnered with the provinces of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador to upgrade the Churchill Falls Generating Station and develop the Gull Island project. This $10 billion clean energy investment is set to improve inter-provincial grid connectivity, reduce electricity costs for consumers and industries, and lower emissions through better utilization of low-cost renewable energy sources.
The joint agreement aims to enhance inter-provincial grid connections by linking provincial grids more effectively. This will strengthen grid reliability and resilience against extreme weather events, making it a crucial step towards Canada's national electricity strategy, Powering Canada Strong.
New Economy Canada welcomed the move, emphasizing that affordable, reliable clean power is foundational for economic growth and industrial competitiveness. The group also highlighted the importance of integrating the Labrador Trough Clean Power, Critical Minerals and Infrastructure Corridor with the new transmission infrastructure to support mining operations that produce inputs for batteries.
