Canada Seeks AI Advantage Through Data Centre Expansion
Canada's history in artificial intelligence (AI) runs deeper than its recent investment announcements. AI pioneers Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, and Richard Sutton were instrumental in developing the field at Canadian universities.
The country built on this intellectual foundation by launching a national AI strategy in 2017, supporting research institutes and attracting top researchers. However, the character of the competition has changed, with AI now relying on physical infrastructure such as data centres, specialized chips, and enormous amounts of electricity.
Canada's next challenge is converting its legacy into lasting technological and economic capacity. Data centres are becoming a crucial part of the AI economy, providing access to computing resources that influence research and development. According to the International Energy Agency, global data centre electricity use is projected to double by 2030, presenting Canada with a credible opportunity to capture a share of this growth.
Canada has an estimated 239 data centres concentrated mainly around Toronto and Montreal, with advantages varying by region. Quebec and British Columbia have extensive hydroelectric resources, while Ontario has a largely non-emitting grid anchored by nuclear and hydro power. A cool climate can reduce cooling energy requirements, and Canada offers political stability, proximity to the American market, and a highly educated workforce.
