Canada Seeks Diversification in ASEAN Partnership

Canada is looking to diversify its economy and trade relationships as it navigates the changing global landscape. The country's economic relationship with the United States will remain important, but recent events have highlighted the risks of economic concentration.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) represents nearly 700 million people and an economy approaching $6 trillion. Canada has much to offer ASEAN, including its expertise in energy, critical minerals, agriculture, and advanced technologies. In turn, ASEAN offers Canada growth, diversification, and long-term economic partners.

Canada-ASEAN trade reached over $52 billion in 2025, a 24% increase from the previous year. The Canadian government aims to conclude negotiations on a Canada-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement by the end of this year, which could add nearly $2 billion to Canada's GDP and create almost 14,000 jobs.

However, signing trade agreements is only part of the job. Relationships matter, and Canadian business has an opportunity to lead alongside government in building partnerships with ASEAN countries.
