Canada Seeks to Build Strength, Diversify Partnerships Amid Global Uncertainty
Mark Carney addressed the Canada Investment Summit and emphasized the need for Canada to build its strength at home while diversifying partnerships abroad. He highlighted that Canada is a safe harbour, but also a base for building in the new global economic order.
The world has become more dangerous and divided, with sovereignty and openness in tension. Carney noted that Canada recognized this rupture earlier than most and responded by taking care of itself and others. This involved consolidating strength at home and diversifying partnerships abroad.
Canada's goal is to catalyze one trillion dollars of investment in the country over the next five years, with a focus on energy, transportation, tech, data, defense, and more. The government has already cut taxes, removed barriers to internal trade, and accelerated the approval process for projects. This effort aims to build a stronger, more resilient economy.
Carney highlighted Canada's potential as an energy superpower, with plans to advance a pipeline that would carry one million barrels of low-emission oil per day to Asian markets. He also emphasized the country's commitment to clean energy, citing the largest clean energy investment in North American history, 14 gigawatts of hydro, wind, and storage.
