Canada Seeks US$720 Billion in Project Investments at Toronto Summit
Canada is hosting its Canadian Investment Summit in Toronto to attract high-powered investors and secure CAN$1 trillion (US$720 billion) in project investments. The two-day event aims to offset the impact of the Canada-US trade war, which has strained bilateral ties.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has experience as governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, is leading the initiative. He emphasized that new opportunities are emerging for investors in Canada, citing the country's stability and financial safety as key attractions.
The summit features 170 financial projects being pitched to potential investors, including an oil pipeline from Alberta's oil sands to the western British Columbia coast. Carney has secured commitments of hundreds of billions of dollars from domestic banks and pension funds to support these projects.
Carney is optimistic that this investment will provide a financial cushion for Canada in case the trade war with the US continues. He highlighted Canada's wealth of in-demand goods, including energy, resources, talent, technology, and trust, which he believes cannot be found on any balance sheet.
