Canada Sees Opportunity for Trade Deal with US When Washington Is Ready

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney said on September 4 that his country is ready to reach a trade agreement with the United States when Washington is prepared. Carney emphasized that any deal must benefit both countries and provide stability and credibility.

He rejected recent comments from U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who claimed Canada had walked away from a trade agreement due to domestic politics. Carney said these individuals were not experts on Canadian politics and that they should not have made such statements.

The Prime Minister also noted a softening in the U.S. approach to a potential trade agreement, which could lead to further discussions. He described the U.S. position before negotiations broke down last month as an 'our way or the highway' attitude, but now believes they are more willing to compromise.

U.S. President Donald Trump responded to Carney's remarks by posting on Truth Social that it was good for Canadian politicians like Prime Minister Mark Carney to make him 'the enemy.' He warned that Canada's economy would collapse and be worse than anything that has ever happened to a Canadian politician if they continue down this path.
