Canada Services PMI Slumps to Six-Month Low Amid Trade Tensions
Canada's services economy contracted at its steepest pace in six months in August due to rising trade tensions and geopolitical instability. The Business Activity Index, a key measure of economic performance, fell to 46.8 last month from 49.1 in July, marking its lowest level since February.
This decline indicates that the sector is experiencing a contraction, as a reading below 50 signifies a downturn in activity. The new business measure was also affected, dropping to 46.1, its lowest level since January and down from 48.4 in July.
The ongoing conflict in the Middle East and escalating trade tensions with the US weighed heavily on Canada's service sector, causing clients to remain reluctant to commit to new contracts. Paul Smith, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, noted that 'confidence about the future was at its lowest level in over a year.'
