Canada Slaps $20 Billion Worth of Tariffs on US Goods Amid Trade War Escalation
Canada has retaliated against the US with tariffs on $20 billion worth of American goods in response to the latest round of tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.
The move, which took effect on Tuesday, targets hundreds of products including steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics, and farm equipment at rates of 15%, 25%, or 50%.
The tariffs match the US dollar for dollar and rate for rate, according to Canada. The country's Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that US demands could hollow out key Canadian industries and limit the country's independence.
Robert Bothwell, a Canadian historian, believes that Mr. Carney and Canada have become symbolic of resistance to President Trump, who is seeking to make an example of them.
