Canada Slaps Tariffs on US Goods in Escalating Trade War
Canada has imposed tariffs on over $20 billion worth of U.S. goods in response to the latest round of tariffs from Washington. The move, announced by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, targets hundreds of American products including steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics, and farm equipment.
The tariffs, which range from 15% to 50%, are a direct retaliation against U.S. President Donald Trump's economic pressure on Canada. According to RBC Economics, the research arm of the Royal Bank of Canada, the measures are unlikely to dent U.S. growth overall but could hit some businesses hard.
Carney has warned that U.S. demands could hollow out key Canadian industries and limit the country's independence. Trump's threats to Canadian sovereignty have rallied the public behind Carney, with many Canadians boycotting U.S. goods and cutting travel to the United States.
