Canada Stands Firm Against Trump's Trade War
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has gained international recognition for his stance against US President Trump's trade war. In January, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Carney articulated that the post-Cold War order had been disrupted and that middle powers could forge their own path through cooperation.
Since then, Canada has continued to resist US demands, making it a lone holdout against Trump's trade war despite its deep integration with the US economy. The two countries were negotiating a trade deal when talks collapsed over last-minute American demands for concessions on language and culture policy, as well as limits on Canada's freedom to sign trade deals with other countries.
Canada's willingness to resist US pressure is largely due to strong public support for Prime Minister Carney's handling of the situation. Seventy-one percent of Canadians support his decision to walk away from a bad deal, and there is a widespread understanding that depending on an unstable America poses risks.
