Canada Stocks Fall as Financials Sink and Oil Prices Soar

The Canadian stock market took a hit on Wednesday as financial stocks plummeted by 2.93%, outweighing a significant rise in oil prices.

Oil prices surged due to renewed Middle East tensions, with September WTI crude climbing 6.6% to $84.46 per barrel and Brent rising 8.1% to $90.88.

However, the energy sector's gains were not enough to offset the decline in financial stocks, which make up a significant portion of the S&P/TSX index.

The Federal Reserve's decision to keep interest rates steady at 3.50%-3.75% for a fifth straight meeting also contributed to the market downturn, as it signaled that borrowing costs may remain restrictive and negatively impact bank shares.
