Canada Strengthens Internal Trade Amid Global Uncertainty

Federal, provincial, and territorial ministers met in Iqaluit, Nunavut, to strengthen internal trade across Canada. With the suspension of trade negotiations with the US, ministers agreed that now is the time to build a more prosperous and resilient economy at home.

Newfoundland and Labrador was represented by Minister of Finance Craig Pardy. Ministers accelerated efforts to reach an agreement in principle on model mutual recognition legislation by the end of fall 2026. This would create a common Canadian market and support labour mobility.

Labour Mobility: Ministers ratified amendments to the Canadian Free Trade Agreement, setting a 30-day service standard for applications. This improves transparency and accountability, reduces red tape, and makes it easier for workers to move where their skills are needed.
