Canada Strikes Back Against Trump Tariffs
Canada has responded to President Donald Trump's latest round of tariffs by imposing identical trade penalties on goods from the United States. The Canadian finance minister, Francois-Philippe Champagne, announced the measures at a press conference in Ottawa, stating that Canada would 'match the U.S. dollar for dollar, rate for rate' on trade penalties.
The move comes after trade negotiations between the two countries fizzled out on Friday, with Ottawa complaining that Washington was treating it as a second-class partner. The planned 50% tariff on $28 billion worth of Canadian goods went through on Saturday, and Trump then announced another round of tariffs on products such as automobiles and car parts, set to go into effect at the beginning of next year.
The relationship between the two countries has been strained in recent days, with Trump making a lighthearted jab about renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America. However, the Canadian government has taken a serious stance on the issue, vowing to protect its workers and businesses from what it sees as unfair trade practices.
