Canada Suspends Trade Talks with US Amid Retaliatory Vow
Canada has suspended trade negotiations with the United States after Prime Minister Mark Carney decided to walk away from talks. The decision came after new tariffs of 50% on billions of dollars in Canadian exports to the US took effect at midnight.
Carney vowed that Canada would retaliate with equal measures, signaling a hard stance against the US trade policies.
Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette has called for government support to help businesses and workers affected by the tariffs, stating that her priority is to defend Quebec's interests and protect its economy.
Federal NDP Leader Avi Lewis echoed Carney's decision, saying he correctly read the room when rejecting the US offer, which would have locked in destructive tariffs and undermined Canada's ability to regulate big tech companies. He also called out President Trump as weak and unable to be trusted to abide by any agreement.
