Canada Suspends Trade Talks with US Amid Tariff Deadline
Canada has suspended trade negotiations with the United States after negotiations failed to meet Canadian objectives ahead of an August 21 midnight deadline. The US had set a deadline for Canada to agree on a deal, but Prime Minister Mark Carney's office announced that no agreement would be reached.
The breakdown in talks comes as the US is set to impose a 50% tariff on $28 billion worth of Canadian goods starting at midnight. In response, Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect its workers and businesses.
Carney stated that his government had been focused on building Canada's strength at home and diversifying partnerships abroad, which has led to significant economic growth. He emphasized that Canada would not allow any nation to determine its future and would set its own course to keep building a strong economy.
