Canada Suspends Trade Talks with US Amid Tariff Dispute
Canada's trade negotiations with the US have been suspended by Prime Minister Mark Carney. The decision comes after recent weeks of progress in talks, but the Canadian government believes the proposed terms from the US are unfair and uneconomic.
Carney stated that Canada will match any tariffs imposed on its goods by the US dollar for dollar to protect Canadian workers and businesses. This includes a planned 50% tariff on $28 billion of Canadian goods, which is set to take effect at midnight tonight.
The suspension of trade talks is seen as a major setback for both countries' economies, particularly in light of Canada's strong economic growth over the past 18 months. The country has been focused on building its strength at home and diversifying its partnerships abroad, with significant infrastructure projects underway and export markets being unlocked.
Canada's economy is expected to have the second-fastest growth in the G7 over the next two years, with exports to non-US markets set to double by the end of this decade. However, the country will now take additional measures to support its workers and businesses, building on nearly $25 billion in support provided since 2018.
