Canada Suspends Trade Talks with US Over 'Unfair' Tariffs
Canadian Prime Minister Carney addressed the nation about the country's trade negotiations with the United States. The Prime Minister emphasized that Canada cannot control the changing trade climate in Washington, but can chart a new course by building strength at home and diversifying trading relationships abroad.
The US has imposed a series of tariffs on Canadian goods, citing various justifications such as fentanyl, taxes on tech giants, and wildfire smoke. However, Prime Minister Carney pointed out that the US's merchandise trade deficit with Canada only exists because they import 99% of their natural gas, 85% of electricity, and 60% of crude oil from Canada.
Canada has proposed a comprehensive deal to protect Canadian workers and their families, strengthen the economy, and respect Canadian sovereignty. However, the US has demanded more concessions without offering enough in return. As a result, Prime Minister Carney suspended trade negotiations with the US and directed Canada's negotiators to return to Ottawa.
