Canada Targets Trump with Precision: Tariffs Aim at Key U.S. States

Canada's counter-tariffs on U.S. goods aim to cause maximum pain for the Trump administration, but not just any U.S. states will do.

Economist Trevor Tombe says the goal is to target areas where Canadians have options at home or beyond the U.S., and where the business community in the U.S. can speak up and influence politicians.

Tombe estimates that Canada's planned retaliatory tariffs on Michigan exports amount to about 0.3% of the state's economy, similar in percentage terms to the latest U.S. tariffs' impact on Canada's GDP.

The Canadian government has announced billions in counter-tariffs on hundreds of American products, including fish, cosmetics, and furniture, as a response to the U.S.'s 50% tariff increase.
