Canada Tests Its Independence with Dollar-for-Dollar Retaliation
Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, has been warning about economic coercion by more powerful countries. Now, President Donald Trump is putting that warning to the test with new tariffs on Canadian goods.
The U.S. imposed a 50% duty on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, which prompted Carney to announce dollar-for-dollar retaliation starting September 8th.
This marks a significant escalation in trade tensions between Canada and the U.S., with the stakes being high for both countries. Nearly three-quarters of Canada's exports go to the United States, whose economy is roughly 10 times larger.
Carney has framed this confrontation as a test of whether Canada can preserve its independence under U.S. pressure, saying 'That will never, ever happen.'
