Canada Threatens Energy Export Tax in Trade Dispute with US
Canada's economy is heavily dependent on energy exports to the United States, with about 60% of America's oil and 98% of its natural gas imports coming from Canada. This makes Canada a significant player in the US energy market.
But now, tensions have risen between the two countries due to Donald Trump's economic policies, which Canadian columnist Diane Francis argues are akin to an 'economic war' against its northern neighbor.
Francis suggests that Canada should impose export taxes on its energy exports to the US until Trump backs off. This move would increase prices for American consumers and businesses, hurting the US economy.
Canada is not only a major supplier of oil and natural gas but also provides 80% of America's potash, an essential fertilizer. An export tax on this critical mineral would raise costs for American farmers, who are already struggling due to low incomes.
