Canada Told to End Retaliation or Face New Tariffs Next Week
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has urged Canada to scrap its retaliatory trade measures against US products, warning that new tariffs are set to take effect next week if they don't.
The threatened 50% duties on an additional $20 billion worth of goods imported from Canada would cause significant damage, according to Quebec Economy Minister Bernard Drainville. He emphasized that any concession on dairy quotas or other issues would require something in return for the province.
Greer pointed out that the US wants Canadian provinces to reverse their bans on American alcohol sales and address protectionism on dairy and procurement rules. The two sides have held intensive talks in Washington ahead of the August 19 deadline, but a resolution has yet to be reached.
