Canada-U.S. Relations Strained as Canadians Boycott Travel
Canadian tourists are boycotting travel to the US in response to President Donald Trump's policies and rhetoric, which they feel has strained relations between the two countries.
Kent Truscott from London, Ontario, cancelled a trip to Texas to watch the SpaceX Starship launch, opting instead for a vacation in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. His family spent thousands of dollars on accommodations and activities in Canada, rather than traveling south.
According to national data, Canadians made 800,000 fewer trips to the US in April compared to the same time in 2024 before Trump's re-election. This has resulted in a loss of around C$3.3bn ($2.35bn; £1.75bn) in travel revenue for the US last year.
Many Canadians, like Truscott and his family, feel that their country's relationship with the US has reached a breaking point. Some are driven by Trump's treatment of Canada, while others cite the declining Canadian dollar as making the US less affordable.
