Canada-U.S. Trade Talks Continue Ahead of Looming Tariffs
Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer held a fifth round of virtual talks on Sunday, described as 'constructive' by LeBlanc's office.
The meeting comes just three days before a 50% tariff deadline set to take effect on Wednesday, August 19th.
LeBlanc and Greer were joined by Canada's chief trade negotiator, Janice Charette, in the one-hour virtual meeting, which aimed to review recent progress and identify the work that still lies ahead.
A spokesperson for LeBlanc noted that 'they took stock of the work that has been done by their respective negotiating teams, and discussions are continuing.'
Divisions remain among officials, with Quebec Economy Minister Bernard Drainville saying the two sides appear far from an agreement.
