Canada Unleashes Retaliatory Tariffs Against US Amid Escalating Trade War
Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs against the US in response to President Donald Trump's recent trade war actions. The tariffs, which will go into effect on September 8, target over 700 US-made products, including seafood, cheese, clothing, cosmetics, and toilet paper, with duties as high as 50%.
The move is seen as a direct response to Trump's decision to impose tariffs on Canadian imports, including dairy products. Canadian officials have emphasized that the goal of the retaliatory tariffs is not to raise revenue but to protect Canadian companies and reduce US imports.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said, 'This is a moment to stand up,' adding that Canada will not accept restrictions on its ability to choose its trading partners. The country aims to cushion the blow to its economy and consumers with a support package worth $7.5 billion Canadian dollars (US$5.4 billion).
The trade war between the two countries has been escalating, with Trump imposing tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum earlier this year. The conflict has also sparked warnings from industry leaders that it could have far-reaching consequences for businesses and workers on both sides of the border.
