Canada Unveils New Vertical $20 Bill Featuring King Charles III
The Bank of Canada has announced a new design for its $20 bill, which will enter circulation in February 2027. The new vertical design features King Charles III on the obverse side, replacing his late mother Queen Elizabeth II whose portrait has been on 18 different Canadian banknotes since 1935.
The reverse side of the note features an image of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial located at the site of the 1917 Battle of Vimy Ridge in France. The updated polymer banknote includes advanced security features and innovative 3D design, such as a purple security strip that creates a moving effect when tilted.
The new bill also incorporates four plants with cultural significance to Indigenous peoples in Canada: wild strawberries, western red cedar, braided sweetgrass, and arctic cotton. These additions aim to make the currency more representative of Canadian culture and history.
