Canada Unveils Retaliatory Tariffs Against US After Trade Talks Collapse
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney held a news conference on August 22, 2026, after failed trade talks with the United States. Carney stated that Canada cannot control the 'storm that blows in from Washington' but can control its trading relationships abroad.
He emphasized that they worked intensively and in good faith to reach an agreement that protects workers and families while strengthening the Canadian economy and sovereignty. However, he rejected the U.S. offer, saying 'we cannot accept what they've offered and we will not give what they've asked.'
The retaliatory tariffs will be concentrated in sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics.
