Canada Urged to Invest in Modern Rail Infrastructure
Transport Action Canada has submitted its recommendations for Canada's 2026 Federal Budget, focusing on modernizing the country's rail transportation network. According to the organization, a well-functioning rail system is crucial for achieving economic, societal, and environmental objectives. A modern rail network would enable both freight and people to move efficiently, supporting Canada's economy and resilience in a changing world.
The group proposes creating a Strategic Rail Infrastructure Fund to finance infrastructure resilience projects, including the implementation of Enhanced Train Control to improve rail safety and expand freight capacity. This initiative is expected to enhance public transit and reduce subsidies for passenger services. Additionally, Transport Action Canada recommends providing stable operating funding for VIA Rail over the next five years, aligned with its strategic plan to increase ridership.
The organization also suggests removing GST from all train and motorcoach fares, ensuring rural and northern residents have equal tax treatment for public transport as those in urban centers.
