Canada-US Relations Hit New Low Amid Trade Tensions
Canadians are increasingly distancing themselves from their southern neighbors in response to ongoing trade disputes and verbal threats. One example is the city of Ottawa, where residents have long been dissatisfied with the name Trump Avenue. Now that US President Donald Trump has imposed new tariffs on Canadian goods and signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America', local politicians are moving to rename the street.
The neighborhood in question features New York City-themed street names, including Central Park and Bloomingdale Street. However, not everyone is pleased with this nod to American culture. The city council's decision to rebrand Trump Avenue comes amidst a broader trend of Canadians pulling away from their US counterparts.
Some Canadians have even taken it upon themselves to boycott US products and refrain from traveling south of the border since Trump returned to office in early 2025. His renewed attacks on Canada may be driving a more permanent rift between two longtime allies, manifesting in everyday interactions such as supply chains and vacation bookings.
According to Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem, he hopes for a return to normal relations with the US but doesn't anticipate reverting to the pre-2025 era when dealing with an American administration that favors tariffs and protectionism.
