Canada-US Trade Talks Collapse as Economies Lock Horns
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne met US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in North Carolina, marking the first senior contact between Canadian and US officials since trade talks collapsed. The meeting occurred just 10 days after negotiations broke down.
Bessent told CNBC that Canada cannot engage in a 'tit-for-tat' fight with an economy 13 times its size, suggesting that such a strategy would be futile. He also implied that Canada had been offered the best possible trade deal and walked away at the last minute.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canadian tariffs will target steel, dairy, agricultural equipment, and pulp and paper, among other sectors, with a total value of around $20 billion per year. US tariffs on $28 billion worth of Canadian goods took effect on August 22.
Economists warn that the escalation could be difficult for Canada's central bank to navigate, as counter-tariffs and elevated oil prices leave policymakers reluctant to add stimulus even as growth takes a hit.
