Canada-US Trade Talks Stall Ahead of Tariff Deadline
Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Monday, just two days before new 50% tariffs are set to go into effect.
The meeting was the sixth between LeBlanc and Greer in three weeks, as officials try to reach a deal before the deadline. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he expects to speak with US President Donald Trump before then, but refused to discuss the state of talks.
Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs on Canadian goods, including those from the softwood lumber industry, which currently faces 45% tariffs in the US. The tariff uncertainty is causing concern for Canada's economy and could have significant consequences for affected industries and regions.
