Canada-US Trade Talks Stalled as Deadline Looms for Tariffs

Canadian Minister Dominic LeBlanc says that Canada and the US are still far from reaching a draft trade deal. Despite regular meetings, significant differences remain between the two sides.

The issue is critical because a new 50% tariff on $20bn of Canadian goods will come into effect on August 19 if no agreement is reached. This would cover nearly 5.2% of Canada's exports to the US and pose an added risk to its economy.

LeBlanc has met his US counterparts, including Jamieson Greer, four times in three weeks, but progress remains slow. LeBlanc said that 'nothing is agreed until everything is agreed' in negotiations like this.
