Canada-US Trade Tensions Escalate as Tariff Talks Break Down

The trade tensions between the US and Canada have escalated as negotiations to avoid new tariffs on Canadian goods broke down. The proposed 50% tariff on approximately 5% of Canada's exports, which was threatened a month ago, has been met with resistance from the Canadians. President DJT tweeted that 'Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!! They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!'

The disagreement is causing concern about its impact on inflation, with Neel Kashkari, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, warning that 'the longer there's back and forth on the trade front, just like the longer there's back and forth on monetary policy, it tends to lead to more uncertainty for households and businesses.'
