Canada-US Trade War Escalates as Tariffs Reach New Heights
The once-strong alliance between Canada and the United States has been severely strained after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged that this marks a fundamental shift in the relationship, saying 'America has changed' and that Canada cannot return to its old relationship with the US.
Carney warned in January at the World Economic Forum in Davos about the risk of economic coercion from great powers, urging countries like Canada to reduce their vulnerability by strengthening their economies and diversifying abroad. He accused the U.S. of using 'economic integration as a weapon' and said its actions were 'written in pencil.'
Canada will retaliate dollar for dollar beginning Sept. 8, targeting sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. The tariffs directly affect about 0.4% of Canada's GDP, according to Royal Bank of Canada economists.
